Becoming involved in this event...

1. How did you get involved in the Bottlemart 2008 Smiling for Smiddy Challenge?

Over the past few years, the company I work (Rio Tinto) for has sponsored the event.  I'd heard about the ride and this year wanted to get more involved.  We heard about a chance to ride and here I am (ready or not)!!!

2. If you knew Adam Smiddy please share how you knew him and what it means for you to ride in remembrance of Adam?

Unfortunately I never met Adam, however his story has really inspired me.  As we are of similar age, so it has really hit home hard.  I believe that there cannot be enough communication and awareness raised about cancer, especially skin and prostate.  It is so important for people of all ages to take known precautions (such as slip, slop, slap, seek, slide) and seek regular medical checks.

3. Please list your reasons why you will undertake this 1600 kilometre challenge?

Firstly to raise more awareness of cancer.  Also, I wish to celebrate Adam's life and his fantastic legacy.  Lastly, the obvious personal challenge involved.

Your expectations of this event...

4. What do you expect the ride to be like, and what will you do to get through it?

I expect this ride to be tough, it is unlike anything I've ever done before.  I've done some challenging one day events, but never anything for eight days!!!  For survival, I'm sure all the others on the ride will get me through.  Having such a great group of people, the spirit of the ride will get us home.

5. This ride has no rest days - do you think you will physically or mentally "crack"? What will you do if you do crack, or how will you make sure you don't?

Absolutely I'll crack, just hopefully not in the first 20 kilometres!!!  It's just a matter of understanding your body's limits, taking your time and knowing when to take a break.

6. What is your advice for other riders accompanying you on your journey?

Enjoy each other's company, it makes the days go so much quicker.  Provide heaps of encouragement and have a laugh (the best medicine)!!

7. How will you deal with spending 24 hours a day with 50 riders and 10 support personal for eight days in a row?

I'd probably ask how they'll deal with me!!  Most of the people on the ride I haven't met before, so I'm really looking forward to meeting some new people and hearing their stories.  We'll have to have a few sing-a-longs as well!!

What you bring to this event...

8. What are your 'good' attributes and how will they help you complete the Bottlemart 2008 Smiling for Smiddy Challenge?

Hopefully I'll bring a good sense of teamwork.  That'll be the best way to get through this - together!

9. Do you have any bad traits that you wish to share with your team mates prior to the ride starting?

All I'll say is that vanity will be left at the door!.

10. Are you a team person? And how do you see yourself fitting in with the group, especially when the realisation hits home that the ride is no picnic in the park?

I would like to think so...  I believe we'll have to help each other to Townsville, so we need to ensure that we communicate well and often (ie, not via e-mail).

11. How much are you hoping to raise? Do you think you can become the highest fund raiser for the ride?

I'm still not too sure...  I'm really hoping that my family and friends can get behind me and help raise some much needed funds.  The more the merrier!!

What your preparation consists of...

12. Will you do anything different, besides riding, to help you prepare for the ride

Eating - it's always important to practise eating!!!

13. What is the longest distance you have covered in the past over one week, and how did you handle it physically and mentally?

I've done a three day bike tour before, covering roughly 450km.  But this is in a completely different ballpark.

Your supporters...

14. What would you like to pass on to your personal supporters?

I thank them for their encouragement...  I wouldn't be even able to dream about doing such a thing without them.
